L&L DVDs are BACK!

Hi Guys,

I'm incredibly pleased to announce that we've put together a deal that will allow us to offer the FULL RANGE of L&L products to our Penguin customers. We've received a large number of requests for L&L products over the past few months, and we're pleased and proud to be able to offer them to you Penguin-style once again (at the lowest prices in the world). Smart shoppers only, please!

Louis over at L&L is a great guy, and he and his whole team (including Steve Pellegrino, L&Ls ultra-talented webmaster) do a great job.

Expect to see new L&L titles on the Penguin website soon.

Thanks to everyone who has suggested we make this move. One thing you can count on for sure is that we listen our customers and do everything in our power to follow your suggestions. We know who's boss... you are! (thanks for being nice about it)

Ehrich Weiss from Sunny SW Florida, you ROCK!

One of my favorite things about the Penguin site is our user submitted trick reviews. We now have over 17,000 trick reviews on the site. Some are outrageously positive and practically command viewers to ADD TO CART, some are negative and all but threaten to lock-up anyone who orders the product, and ALL are helpful. We're lucky to have such an enthusiastic and passionate userbase. We're just as excited about great magic as you are, we LOVE it that you're out there getting great results with our products, and when a product lets you down we love it that you care enough about us to let us know.

Thanks to everyone who posts reviews, and thanks especially to Ehrich Weiss who posted this helpful review on the Deluxe Turtle Shells by Black Fox earlier today:

"I do a 6 minute routine with these talking about my pet turtles and how they lay eggs but sometimes they eat the eggs and I finish by lapping one as I switch it out for an actual live turtle which gets AMAZING reactions from the crowd when they see it poke out it's head and start to walk across the mat. The turtle, Bram, is a dwarf red eared slider and can be found in most pet stores. For birthday parties he is awesome because at that point I can let the kids play with him while I sneak off to eat a piece of birthday cake. Always remember when negotiating to include a piece of birthday cake as part of your performance fee."

Reviews like this get me fired up. I love it when people contribute like this. That's what makes Penguin a special place on the web, and I'm incredibly proud of that. You're the man, Ehrich. You're exactly the kind of person and performer we built Penguin Magic for, and you've made Penguin a better place for everyone.

If you happen to read this, email me a picture of Bram: maxwell@penguinmagic.com

David Blaine is BACK!

We're extremely excited about the upcoming David Blaine special. Rumor has it this is going to be his best special yet. We've got word that the ACTUAL MAGIC on the special is some of the most visual and strongest he's ever done on TV. Rumor is there's PLENTY on the special that will fool magicians.

The Penguin crew is planning a big party at Noblezada's pad to watch the special.

I'm working in London at the moment (and for the next month I'll be working in the Penguin UK office), so I won't be able to make it to the party on May 8th. But, Noblezada has promised he'll set up a webcam at the party and point it at his huge HI DEF TV so I can watch too.

Here's a link to the show details: http://www.abcmedianet.com/showpage/showpage.html?program_id=002031&type=lead

I'm excited!

The GREED gimmick Danny built in the video...

After we were done with the GREED shoot, Danny gave me the GREED gimmick he built when we were filming the construction section.

I saw Simon later that day and I performed GREED for him. Simon loved the routine, and he BEGGED me to let him have the gimmick. At first I said no, but Simon had a huge corporate in two days in LA, and he wanted the trick BAD! I was getting such great reactions with GREED that I really was going to say no, but then I remembered Simon had given me a HUNDY 500 gimmick a few months earlier. I had no choice... I pretty much had to give him my GREED gimmick.

I built another one a few days later, and that's the one I'm using now. I emailed Simon earlier and asked him if he's still been performing GREED.

Simon just wrote back:

"Yes, last night at the party for Jimmy Carter's son Jack Carter who's running for office in Nevada."

So, there's a little bit of trivia for you... The actual GREED gimmick that you'll see being built in the GREED DVD was working Jack Carter's party last night in Vegas! Guests at the party included Bill Clinton and other democrat party heavyweights.

Daniel Garcia called...

I just got a call from Daniel Garcia.

He heard through the grapevine that the pre-order madness was going on, and called to check in.

He said, "Maxwell, I want to do something special for the Penguin customers and hook them up with a special pre-order price."

I said, "Great, what do you have in mind?"

He said, "Instead of $29.95... Lets make it $19.95 for anyone who pre-orders."

I said, "I love you."

So, $19.95 it is! Get your pre-order in now. As soon as the DVD comes in the price jumps back to $29.95.

GREED Starring Daniel Garcia!

Here's the text of a recent email we sent out about GREED, an incredible new DVD starring Daniel Garcia:

Hi Penguin,

We've been getting email after email asking about a new product that mysteriously appeared on the Penguin Magic website a few days ago.

"it sounds incredible..."
"too good to be true..."
"impossible..."
"must be false advertising..."

GREED is Daniel Garcia's ultra visual FOUR PHASE money routine. When you read the product description you'll feel the same way. This routine sounds TOO GOOD to be true. We're talking about FOUR incredible phases, NO funny moves, ULTRA-VISUAL MORPHS, EASY to perform, and a finish that leaves everybody laughing... it's no wonder many of you said "there's no way".

But, just a few minutes ago we posted the demo video. Suddenly, the emails stopped and the pre-orders started POURING IN!

GREED is now officially available for pre-order! Our first shipment will be here in just a few short weeks, and we highly recommending pre-ordering to guarantee availability.

Here's what people who have seen advance copies of the DVD are saying:

"This is the PERFECT routine for restaurants and pretty much any strolling gig... Wait a minute... stand up, corporate, trade shows, sales meetings, TV spots... Yeah, it's definitely a Danny Garcia hit!" -- Noblezada

"This is the best money magic routine I've ever seen. It's brilliantly constructed. Garcia gives us a series of four breathtakingly VISUAL changes... Each change building on what has come before, and each leading toward a climax so subtle, surprising, clever and funny that I've never seen a spectator grumpy enough to resist its charms. Highly recommended. I built my gimmick the night we got done shooting, and I've been performing the routine everywhere I go ever since. I can't recommend this routine highly enough." -- Maxwell Murphy, Penguin Magic

"I had two effects that I carried on me at all times...now I have three! Doing magic with real money never fails to help me get attention and build up a crowd of spectators. With Greed by Daniel Garcia, the changes are so visual they make the spectators stop and scratch their heads in disbelief. Until you do the next phase and they see the magic AGAIN!" -- Sam Blankenship, Penguin Magic

You've got to see GREED for yourself. There's no description that can do it justice. The changes are breathtaking.

Thanks for choosing Penguin Magic. You were born to perform. Now go out and entertain the world.

Sincerely,

Maxwell Murphy

Oz Takes 224th Place in the Boston Marathon!

Ozer made us all proud today when he turned in an official time of 2:44:11 and finished 224th overall in the Boston Marathon.

That's a scorching 6 minutes and 16 seconds per mile pace carried out for a gut-wrenching 26.21 miles!

Here's a screen shot of the official results:

For Oz, born to perform doesn't just mean born to perform on stage... it's the way he approaches everything he does.

Congratulations Oz!

Penn and Teller Now Selling "New" Cars!

When I was in college, I worked at Extreme Dodge selling cars during the summers. Extreme Dodge is positioned in the centrally located Michigan town of Jackson (where, not incidentally, I grew up).

Extreme is one of the most technologically advanced dealerships in the nation. We were testing a bunch of cool new dealership software applications while I was there (which was the best part). I'd get to sit in on meetings with software designers, consultants and the leading thinkers in the automotive IT game.

I even got to sit in on one of the first investor meetings of a software start-up called DealerKid which later sold for millions of dollars. I didn't have any money to invest, but when the company eventually sold, one of the owners bought me a Jeep Wrangler for my help (which made college much more fun).

My specialty at the dealership was "Internet Sales".

This was right around the time Chrysler introduced its "GetAQuote" program, through which a car shopper can pick out the car of their dreams on Chrysler's website, enter their Zip code, and get a no-nonsense quote from a real salesman at a real dealership that actually has the car on the lot. All of this happens in a matter of minutes or hours. In the beginning, a fair amount of my time was spent giving price quotes to 12 year old kids doing school projects (which was fun, but not profitable).

Around this time, my brother and I launched a competing service called ExtremeQuote, but my Internet marketing and entrepreneurial abilities were still in their infancy, and we were unable to drive enough traffic to the site to make the numbers work.

My other early entrepreneurial ventures included starting a company that sold hi-powered attention-getting searchlights to marketers, a company that developed websites for Realtors, and a company that produced specialized instructional materials for employee inservices.

When Acar and I started Penguin it was my fifth company and my first success.

With that background in mind, you'll understand why I was so excited to see that Penn and Teller are now selling cars for Ford Motor Company. Until now, I thought I might have been the magician who had sold the most cars. That title now goes to Penn and Teller!

If you haven't seen them on TV, check out the commercials:

Since I'm on the topic of entrepreneurship, I want to mention two things:

First, I think entrepreneurship is the only way to live. I would encourage, urge, insist and implore anyone who's considering it to GO FOR IT 100% and make it happen. Obviously, most working professional magicians are independent entrepreneurs, so I'm preaching to the choir here on this blog. But, I' m sure some some readers are thinking of making the switch at some point... so I need to say it. In my opinion, there's no other way to live. I work all the time, and I love every moment of it. There's nothing more natural or more human than being an independant entreprenuer.

Second, my experience in business so far has been that when a business fails, it isn't the ideas or the products that fail, it's the people. My first FOUR ventures didn't work out. Each one of those businesses was a great idea with great products, and today there are companies making money doing exactly what I was doing. But, I didn't know how to stay in the fight and battle it out. I gave up too soon. I wasn't comfortable at the edge of catastrophe, and I didn't fight for what I knew was possible. I pulled back resources, minimized risk, and let the businesses fall gently asleep. No investors lost money. I didn't starve to death. My credit wasn't ruined. I wasn't even embarrassed. But, I wasn't a success either.

By the time Acar and I had started Penguin I was different. I had learned how to focus all of my effort and energy like never before, and most importantly I'd learned to STAY IN THE GAME. Now, when we're in the middle of a battle for marketshare or we face personal attacks from competitors, I always think back to my days as a hockey player growing up. I remember exactly what if felt like to look up at the scoreboard late in the second period and be down by a couple of goals. The clock was ticking, my legs were aching, and we had a rough and tough battle ahead. But, many times we'd come away with the victory.

I find my mind drifting to that ice arena again and again... "Come on guys, it's only the second period... lets bare down and get to work. Lets make it happen."

This would be a great action movie...

Simon sent me a link to a story that made me love Copperfield even more. You just want to be the guy's friend and go around messing with people.

Here's what happens when you mix magician David Copperfield, mogul John Melk, and rocker Lenny Kravitz:

Oz puts it on the line in Boston

Oz is someone who's always striving to do and be more in his magic and in all aspects of his life. I've been over at his apartment hanging out, and he'll go over to the door frame and hammer out half a dozen one-handed pull-ups. Or he'll start doing a handstand and walking around on his hands.

And he's ALWAYS working on his magic. How many people do you know who do something professionally and they also do it for fun CONSTANTLY? I don't think I've ever been with him for more than five seconds when he hasn't performed a trick for me. He's always working on something new and pushing himself to the next level.

It's for that reason that I look up to him personally, and I feel fantastic knowing that he's such a good role model for the younger guys that shop at Penguin. That's one of the main things we look for when we're putting together the Penguin Team. We want the best magicians, but we want the guys who are the whole package--the guys who are out there expecting great things from themselves and contributing to the community and the world.

I bring this up because I just got a note from Oz:

"I will be running the Boston Marathon next week on Monday, April 17th. For any fellow Penguins in the Boston area, I'd love to see them out cheering me on. And for those not in the area, they are more than welcome to track my results online in real-time at http://www.bostonmarathon.org/ by typing in Bib# 1929. I'll be out there representing the bird and showing everyone what it means when we say born to perform." -Ozer

I'll be online following Oz's progress, and I hope you get a chance to do the same. Stay tuned for a photo of Oz in action.

Morgan's SURPRISE Party at Firefly

Morgan's wife Mikala threw a surprise party for Morgan at Firefly Las Vegas last night. I missed the party because I'm hanging out with my brother in Ann Arbor, MI (the birthplace of Penguin Magic).

But I couldn't resist giving Morgan a call on his cell a few minutes before the party was scheduled to start... He thought he was on his way to a "quiet dinner" with the family. It was all I could do not to crack up when he started telling me that he just wanted to relax and take it easy on his birthday. Half of Las Vegas was waiting for him at Firefly ready to yell SURPRISE!

Word from the Penguin Crew is that the party was a big success. Noblezada, Sam, Acar, and Charles were all there until the wee hours of the morning (I know they stayed out late because I didn't get my normal early morning influx of email updates from Acar and Sam).

Here are some pics from the party:

Above: Noblezada went snowboarding Sunday in Brian Head, and he hit his head. He's been acting a little crazy ever since. Morgan just likes to feed people.

Firefly is one of our favorite restaurants. It's actually where we filmed portions of Danny Garcia's GREED and TORN TOO DVDs (coming soon) and the Hip Pocket Mullica and Sizzle demos with Oz.

Happy Birthday Morgan!

Today is Morgan's birthday!

In addition to being the star of Liquid Metal, SPUN, and the upcomming Taste Conditions DVD, Morgan is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Magic Historians will one day remember him as the co-inventor of "The Hand Hug", which premieres in GREED with Danny Garcia (which will be out next month).

If you get a chance, send Morgan a happy birthday email: morgan@penguinmagic.com.
