Oz's incredible performance

When I heard that Oz had won his age group (20-24) in the New York Triathlon last month I was impressed.

I just found out that last week he won his age group (20-24) and took 6th place overall in the San Francisco Marathon on Sunday! That's 6th place out of 6000 runners!

Oz's next challenge is Iron Man Wisconsin in September. I'm flying out to Madison to watch Oz compete and hang out with Tom Krzystof, the star of the upcoming Penguin release Go Pro: Tables, Cases and Gear.

Morgan competes at FISM today!

It's early Monday morning in Sweden, and Penguin favorite Morgan Strebler is preparing for his first ever performance at FISM, the World Championships of Magic. Morgan performs his competition act today at 11 AM local time. He's competing in the Mental Magic category.

FISM, often called "The Olympics of Magic", takes place every three years in a different European city. Stockholm, Sweden is host to this year's competition, and Penguin is here in full force.

Penguin favorite Gregory Wilson is here. Greg is competing in the Card Magic category later this week.

Penguin Head Magician Noblezada is here to represent his new Self Tying Shoelace (released through Penguin on May 8th).

Penguin favorite Gazzo is here as a featured lecturer. Gazzo is also here to celebrate the release of his new Street Cups DVD. Gazzo's Street Cups DVD is NOW AVAILABLE for pre-order at Penguin. This is one of the best DVDs we've ever produced. If you pre-order you'll get Gazzo's Street Cups and Balls book (a $20 value) absolutely free. Be sure to check out the demo. Gazzo is hilarious! http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=1419

Cranking out code on the new site!

My bro (Matt) is in from San Francisco to lead development on the new Penguin site. Matt is one of the best web developers I know. He drives a computer like it's a motorcycle... with hardcore driving gloves and everything! We're putting in 16+ hours a day all week, and our goal is to go live with some new features before we leave for FISM on Friday.

We've already implemented one small feature... in response to your feedback that the autoplay STS video on the frontdoor of the site "was driving you nuts!!!" we've made a small change. Now, the STS video only plays the first couple of times you visit. On future visits the site recognizes that you've already watched the STS video and rotates in another video. Hopefully that will be much less annoying (I visit the site more than anyone, and I'm loving the change).

Here's a picture I snapped of Matt writing code for the new site. We're working at my house so we don't have any distractions.

FIVEBUCKS promo cancelled.

Hey Guys,

Just a little more info on why we had to stop this weekend's promo a little bit early.

A handful of users placed multiple orders (in violation of the promo rules). We anticipated this, and were set up to delete the orders of people who were trying to take advantage of the offer. Unfortunately, we ran into some problems automatically deleting the orders. With some users placing tens and tens of FIVEBUCKS orders, and others creating tens and tens of fake usernames
... the situation got out of control fast, and we had to stop the promo.

We're very sorry to have had to stop the giveaway because of a few people trying to take advantage. We'll try to make it up to you with future promos and lots and lots of love.

Acar, Matt, and I are writing code for new Penguin site at this very moment. We're excited about giving you guys all the new features you've been requesting.

Free Heckler with Generation Extreme

In case you didn't get my email this morning, for a limited time we're giving away a FREE Heckler DVD with purchase of a Generation Extreme DVD.

Why? James from the UK inspired the promotion with his question, "What's the most difficult card magic DVD sold at Penguin?"

The answer is Generation Extreme. The material on Generation Extreme is so difficult WE ACTUALLY WARN CUSTOMERS NOT TO BUY IT in the product description.

Happy Birthday Oz!

Maxwell B-Day Pics Recovered!

As you'll know if you were at the Penguin Magic LVMI VIP party this last month, our parties tend to get pretty wild. Maxwell's birthday was no different, only this time, our camera was confiscated by security! Finally after much persistence, I've gotten it back in time to post a few highlights before I leave for FISM!

Above: Acar, Maxwell and Sam chill it out in the VIP.

Above: Proud father Morgan, Hunter and God-pappy Maxwell.

Above: Sammy B. directs security to the dance floor.

While Maxwell may be modest about the incident, I can confirm that no less than 14 arrests were made following the upset victory Maxwell had in the mid-night dance competition at Firefly on Paradise here in Las Vegas.

Morgan opens at the Castle!

Morgan opens tonight at The World Famous Hollywood Magic Castle in Hollywood, California!

This is Morgan's premier performance at the Castle, and he's extremely excited. You might have expected to see Morgan in the Castle's PALACE doing his stage show, but this time he's in the close-up room! Morgan has been doing a lot of close-up lately. In fact, he's competing at FISM in a few short weeks in the Close-up Mentalism category!

Morgan is booked at the Castle from July 10th through July 16th. His first show is tonight at 7PM, and he performs every 45 minutes until 10PM when Gregory Wilson takes over.

I just got off the phone with Sam. He and Morgan are in the car at this very moment headed for the Castle. Morgan has some rehearsals scheduled this afternoon.

Acar, Noblezada, and I are headed for the Castle this Thursday. We'll be in LA through Saturday filming with Morgan and Noblezada for upcoming projects.

Check out the Morgan Store at Penguin Magic to see the latest releases from Morgan Strebler.

Best birthday ever!

Thanks to Sam's INCREDIBLE thoughtfulness I had pretty much the best birthday ever.

Those of you who know Sam know he's the kinda guy who makes things possible. That means it's really, really, really, really fun to work with him. I never know what's gonna happen next... Anything is possible. Sam's constantly putting together new deals and bringing new people and ideas to the table...

Like this morning when I thought I had a 10:00 meeting with Sam and Acar. I walked into the office, sat down and heard somebody say, "Maxwell, you've got a call on line four."

I picked up the phone and heard a voice I recognized... "Happy Birthday Maxwell, it's Seth Godin."

[LONG PAUSE FOLLOWED BY HUGE SMILE] "Hi Seth."

I was completely blown away. Sam had put the whole thing together and arranged for a special birthday call with one of my heroes.

If you asked me to write a list of the five human beings on the planet I'd most like to have a conversation with, Seth Godin would be high on the list. Why? Because I'm a marketer. My passion is creating products and services and offering them to the world. That's what I do at Penguin, and that's why I'm so excited about all the stuff we have in the works for you guys. I find meaning in my life through my work, and I really believe that I'm on this planet to bring products and services to the world that wouldn't exist if I weren't here. Marketing is the "bring to the world" part. Long story short: I love marketing, and Seth Godin is my favorite marketer.

In the past five years I've read hundreds and hundreds of business and marketing books, and I've forgotten almost every word in almost every one of them. But I THINK about the ideas I learned in Seth's books EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I've read Seth's books in print form, and I've listened to each of these same books in audio format at least half a dozen times. I talk about the ideas in the books all the time with my friends and colleagues. I even purchased a copy of Purple Cow for everyone at the Penguin office earlier this year. The bottom line is this: you can't go on a first date with me without going home with a copy of one of Seth's books in your purse.

So, when I picked up the phone this morning and Seth Godin said, "I just wanted to call and wish you a happy birthday and see if you had any questions for me," I was completely and utterly stoked.

We had a great conversation.

We talked about the plans for the new Penguin site, and Seth gave us some great ideas for our new VIDEOS section which (as I've mentioned before) will invite users to submit their own demo videos of all 5000 of our products. User contributed video is gonna be a huge part of the new Penguin site... so get your hair cut and dust off that video camera... we'll be calling on you to submit your own outrageously entertaining demo videos of your favorite tricks in a few short months!

We also talked about Seth's hot new company, Squidoo, which helps people create "lenses" to the web. "Lenses" are focused windows into other people's expertise. Instead of going to a search engine (dumb computer) and sorting through a big heap of sites (21,700,000 results for "Magic Tricks" in Google) until you find what you're looking for, you can go to Squidoo and in two seconds find a "lens" that wil instantly help you contextualize the sites and information that are available to you. A good lens will obviously have links to the best resources in the area of the web you're exploring, but it's the contextual information (presented by someone who's an old (or young) pro in the area) that makes all the difference. That's how you can go from novice to expert yourself in the blink of an eye.

Penguin Magic is going to start getting a LOT more involved in the stuff going on at Squidoo. We'll be creating "lenses" on our areas of expertise--magic retail, magic marketing, and training DVDs (production). Be sure to check out Squidoo and create your own lens (or two). It's fun.

The last thing the King of Viral Marketing did was give me a recommendation for "the best Thai Restaurant in Vegas." Seth said he comes to Vegas a couple times a year, and whenever he's here he makes sure to eat at "Lotus of Siam"... he said "it's the best Thai Restaurant in the world". Gazzo tried to bring me to Lotus of Siam about six months ago, and he said the same thing... "it's the best Thai Restaurant in the world." We knocked on the door, but they were just closing shop. Gazzo got hired for a permanent gig in Key West the next week, and I never went back to try the restaurant.

But, when the King of Viral Marketing gives you some word-of-mouth... you've gotta take the advice. Sam, Acar and I went directly from Penguin over to Lotus of Siam and had an incredible birthday lunch.

The rest of the day was filled with fun (and a great haircut by Brannon), but it was the AM call from Seth that had me smiling from ear to ear all day. Thanks Seth! And thanks Sam for making it happen. But, most of all, thanks to both of you for being the kind of people who make things possible.

Happy Birthday, Maxwell!

At Penguin Magic headquarters this morning, we celebrated Maxwell's 27th birthday! It started out with a little surprise that we all had arranged for him. Maxwell is a tough guy to buy a present for, but Acar and I had agreed that this could be a winner!

After Maxwell arrived at the office this morning, we let him know that he had a call on Line 4. When he picked it up, the voice on the other end of the phone was Seth Godin! Not only is Seth a bestselling author, he is also a successful entrepreneur, and was CEO and founder of a direct marketing company that was acquired by Yahoo! in late 1998. Spend any time discussing marketing with Maxwell, and he'll quickly reccomend Seth's book, Purple Cow. Many of you may know that Maxwell is a big audiobook fan, so for him this was a real treat and a BIG surprise! Seth is a great guy, and it was a blast hearing Maxwell tell us about their conversation!

Please join all of us at Penguin in wishing Maxwell a happy birthday!
