Is NFW simple or does it actually need some slight of hand or card trickery? What about stand up monte? Is it more of the same?

All I know is I hate it and think it is one of the worst tricks I have ever seen.

I don't know about stand up monte. NFW is a great effect, but "it ain't easy." Don't get me wrong, it's very performable. But it does have a couple moves that do take a bit of practice. Hope this helps. I recommend NFW.

Why do you hate it? Do you have any other good suggestions for books or videos regarding cards?

How much practice would it take?

I wouldn't by gimmicks if you don't know the basics of sleight of first. Get a book and you will be much better off. I recommmend The Royal Road to Card Magic by Jean Hugard. Anyone who has to ask whether of not the trick involves sleight of hand shouldn't be buying gimmicks.

magicace888.....I would think that with all the expertise you claim you've learned from books and videos and your claim about being so good at sleights that you would have no problem pulling off NFW! All that is required is a simple sleight of hand count. Didn't your books and videos teach you that?

I think he is just prejudice about gimmicks in general. I don't mind gimmicks and NFW is a great effect, but they should be used sparingly, and are definatly not for new magicians. I find sleight of hand more fun and impressive to the audience because the way you perform a gimmicked trick is different from how you do ungimmicked ones. Thats why you need a balance of both in your routine.

Good advice kimprovo! A balance of gimmicks and sleights is a great way to go. Remember, Daryl's Ultimate Ambition is a gimmick...and it gets him standing ovations everytime he performs it. The sleights impress everyone so that they don't suspect the gimmick. I would highly recommend using a couple "gimmicks" in any routine...and A LOT of working magicians do use NFW.

As I see it, Magicace888 is the kind of guy that likes to piss you off, and disagree with you on everything. I wouldn't take his comments seriously.

The idea to learn sleights before going on to gimmicks makes perfect sense. That's how it should be, they are additives to an already good routine. But to say gimmicks are just for magic newbies isn't right.

Personally, I don't like nfw, the whole routine involves a very shakey elsmley count which looks suspicious from the get go, and at the end the cards aren't examinable, during most performances, the specs do in fact ask to see them, I would rather go with jumping gemeni, which can be done with normal aces, involes more sleight of hand, but has a much greater effect.
