Does anyone know if you need a permit to busk in Houston?

Go to the City of Houston's website and do a search for busking. Also check their bylaws.

I searched the page and couldn't find anything.

Two things. One call the city and ask.

Two, remember it is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

But sometimes more expensive.

I just took a gander as I am planning to head out to Houston to visit family.

This site clearly states that you need a permit:

Look under chapter 40 as they refer to sidewalk performances.

Has anyone worked out there?

I've never had a problem with the "expense" part of it. When a cop tells me It's wrong I just say "Sorry, I'm traveling thru and didn't know, won't do it again."

It says you need one "to conduct sidewalk performances in the theater/entertainment district"

(Theater/entertainment district shall mean the area including to the mid-point of and bounded by Preston Street on the north, Dallas Street on the south, Milam Street on the east, and Interstate Highway 45 on the west.)

Presumably other districts are not regulated. Did not find "sidewalk performances" anywhere else in the municipal code.

(Bear in mind, this is from a paralegal candidate in Canada; I'd still call city hall, ask for the bylaw or licensing department and ask them.)
