When I was a young lad, I remembered seeing the ad for Max Maven's "Nothing" and hadn't looked too much into it at the time. As I became more interested in the concept of mentalism with magic, I started to become attracted to the concept of a show with items truly bought from places like a grocery store, gas station, and office supply store. I have read reviews that report "Nothing" is not very hard hitting, effective, and is rather basic. I respectfully disagree. The entire act is built upon the effect before it and is aptly themed to seem more impossible as the show continues. For example, in part of the show, Max has several people total up numbers to a sum. The sum is then compared, and matched, to a prediction. The predominant theme of this mentalism routine is not entirely mind reading. Much of the show has a theme of chance and incredibly slim odds. I believe this is where most of the reviews make their error by mistaking the actual working of the effect with Max's rather lackadaisical presence and dry humor. The way the effects work are devilishly simple and that's the beauty of "Nothing"; you can modify and inject your own showmanship into the effects, making them not only fit your persona, but also add solid mentalism concepts that would enhance the effect.

"Nothing", put simply, is a very solid foundation for the beginning mentalist yet still effective enough to be used as an entire show.

Teaching: 8.5/10
Video Quality: The best the 90's had
Originality: 7/10
Price: 6.5/10

Overall, I like this set and am already working several of the concepts into my own act (with more professional looking props).

I will answer any questions I can!

I agree completely. Though I did find the video quality to be pretty standard L&L, so a little better than 90's. I'm almost certain Nothing was filmed in 2005.

It's a really great start and is a wonderful thing to have in the back of your mind if you do ever lose your props.
