Was the magic they showed "real," or did they cheat with camera tricks and CGI? (I know we could get into a lengthy discussion of this, but for the purpose of my question, I'm defining "real magic" as that which could be performed in front of a live, confederate-free audience.)

The illusions were good and were certainly able to be performed. Of course you would need a big budget to build them.

Lucas and Spielburg just published a interesting article on the impending implosion of Hollywood and the movies. $25 for movies like Ironman and they'll be in theaters for over a year. Here's the link:

Just saw it and was disappointed. The pace was so frenetic that it was like watching a 2 hour trailer. Every Hollywood cliché has been incorporated in the movie - love tension between lead male and female cops, car chase (editing was so choppy and CGI'd, what ever happened to chases like Bullitt, French Connection, Gone in 60 Seconds, or 7UPs), swat teams running up and down stairs, and of course Morgan Freeman wearing his trademark Fedora hat. Over acted, except for Michael Caine. Looks like it started out as a good story and then the screen writers went crazy with it. To its credit, it does keep you guessing right up to the end.

MOST of the tricks were very doable, that's for sure.

I didn't pay too much attention to the CGI if it didn't involve the tricks, so I can't say much there.

The Hypnotist/Mentalist was very interesting, and although I'm just starting in the field of mentalism, there's a scene where he jabs a man in the solar Plexis to put him into hypnosis. I've never seen this before, so I question the realism... But then again, I payed good money to learn the secrets of hypnosis, I wouldn't want a movie giving them away.

The different forms of magician was very interesting, and the way that just about everything was connected actually made me think on my act, and possible routines in the future :)

My one big complaint however, is that the Magic ended too soon. They still showed a magician's mind set, and it did show parts of stage acts, but most of the tricks were at the introduction of the characters.

One last thing that I found out about the movie is that my watching experience was different than my friend's. During the movie, which magicians helped produce, there were a few things that your see in some classic routines that were just changed to fit a movie format.

All in all, I liked it. It wasn't the best movie ever, but it was fun to watch :)
