I am learning the Hofzinser method out of Card College. I understand the complexities of the sleight, so I've been practicing it about 4 hours a day. However, no matter how much I practice it, there is still a half second pause to nab my target card. For those who have mastered this sleight, how long did it take you to make it look "smooth"? I understand speed will come with being comfortable with the sleight.

I'd recommend picking up Iain Moran's Cullfather video. It's great and he gives a lot of tips.

As for the move, the pause will get smaller and smaller as you practice.

I'd love to be able to pick up books/videos/props, but I am sadly an ill funded magician.

That's understandable. Just work on the sleight slowly and you'll just notice that it gets faster.

Also it might help to slightly slow down your spread. It may help you get the actions to be seamless.

One thing I do is that my thumb is not just on the card above the one to cull but sometimes on 2-3, in addition. So I dont have to reposition/ stop . Hence the process is faster and looks more natural

It's impossible to go through the cards at normal, pretty fast speed and cull the card you want in the exact second you see it with the Hofzinser cull, your thumb doesn't move in the speed of light...
For a cull that takes no time to do, learn the RoadRunner cull
