I was VERY discouraged at first, too. I had the same problems, it looked awkward.
Finally, I did some things that helped it look really smooth.
Have the receiving hand (I assume left) fully stretched out to take the coin. Also, tilt it downward a bit. Hold the coin by the right index finger and thumb, and have all other fingers slightly bent inward.
When the left hand apparently takes the coin, really EXAGERATE (sp?) the motion of closing the fingers. Keep them straight at the beginning, bending only at the very first joints. Slightly tilt the hand upward at the same time. This will give you a split second more of time, as well as a big screen to do the dirty work.
Also, when your right fingertips are behind this screen, the second, third, and forth fingers can straighten out to steal the coin away. This will not be seen, since they should be only slightly bent to begin with, and you can't tell the difference when they straighten.
I tried to give as much help without exposing the method. Keep practicing!
