Nope, that'll damage a dented shell even more. It works for separating two stuck Scotch and Soda coins though.
Carefully roll a smaller coin on the rim from the inside until you work out the flat spot.
If it's close, but coins hang up inside it, find a silk you don't care much about and sandwich that between the coin and the shell. Wedge it in tight. You should be able to pull the fabric taut and pop the shell free. Repeat several times, adding layers of silk if necessary to increase the gap between the coin and shell. Silk is extremely strong. Don't attempt this with something a paper towel, you'll just end up with shredded paper. A cotton hankerchief might or might not work. Typically they're too thick. What you want is a very, very thin layer to act as a spacer to force the mouth of the shell open enough so it no longer sticks.
