What's the best coin trick that requires little or no sleight of hand? I already have scotch and soda (and the trick involving a penny and dime with a similar method and effect). Any suggestions?

If you're a novice, you don't want a single trick. What happens after you do one? You're going to want to do another and they're going to want to see another one. If you've wasted your money on a single trick, then you're stuck. You're both going to be disappointed and it's going to hurt not only your credibility, but your desire to learn another.

Pick up Noblezada's In the Beginning There Were Coins. You'll learn the basics, a few really good tricks, and how to put your own sequences together.

Pick up J.B. Bobo's Modern Coin Magic (Book). That is the bible of coin magic. As far as gimmicked coin effects go, Hopping Halves would be of good value.

BoBo's book and Jay's intro to coin magic DVD. With thoes 2 things you will have more than enough to jump start you!.

There are only 3 kinds of coin tricks I can think of.

1. Ones that need slight of hand
2.Ones that require gimmicks
3.Ones that need both

Learn the slights, they will be the single most useful thing you know as a magician. Especially when your caught without cards or a SP or TT ect.

I actually can think of one trick that does not require any of the above. Can't remember the name of it, but I know it's taught on an "intro to magic" DVD by Michael Ammar. Uses 7 quarters, and the plot is about two thieves trying to steal a farmer's sheep.

I saw the trick performed on TV when I was a kid, and it fooled the heck out of me. Many years later, when I picked up the Ammar DVD, it fooled me again when Ammar performed it. It still brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.

All that said, in the end I agree with what people above have said. Get Bobo's book and/or Jay's DVD, learn the sleights, and you'll be much better off.

I think the trick you're referring to is in the ammar easy to master money miracles. I think maybe the first volume. I'll have to go looking through my collection for that one.
