Coke does work - its the phosphoric acid. Ketchup and other tomato-based products (Taco Bell Hot Sauce) work great as well on COPPER coins only. Do not use it on silver coins, as they will blacken. Also, for spot-cleaning, a white pencil eraser (not pink) works wonders.

A vinegar and salt solution works wonderfully. All my coppers are shining beautifully. It worked much better than Tarn-X.

looks like someone already beat me to the hot sauce suggestion...and it seems that taco bells does work best....coke does work, but not as good..i just watched a whole thing on using coke as a cleaner on "mythbusters"

I have tried a lot of that stuff...and it just gets dirty pretty quick after.

So I tried a vinegar and salt solution (that is why ketchup works). It works great...it is quick and easy and cheap.
