Why only two options? Can't we state something else that we think would go good? I think un-gimmicked coin effects would work really well, because they are just everyday things that they are used to seeing. That or something like an ACR. Just stay away from gimmicked effects, unless you have superb crowd control... which I highly doubt you do.

Why does everybody avoid card tricks in school?

I don't. That's actually all I do. lol I just think coins are a bit more appropriate because kids are used to seeing them everyday, and won't suspect them. But after almost 2 Quarters of handing out my decks for examination, most of the school knows that I don't use "trick decks." Or so they think...

im not avoiding them. i already have a routine of card tricks made up. so im not avoiding them i just already have a lot of them. i actualy love cards in school cuz they are ungimmicked, fully examinable, and (in my case) not setup required.

My Psychology teacher asks me to perform in class every once in a while. He taught guitar last year and I was in his class and did tricks all the time so he knows that's what I do. He also knows I want to do it for a living so he has me perform for the class to, as he says, "practice". It's cool though. It's just hard trying to portray the character that I like to portray for people I know personally. I'm a little more reserved in everyday life, but when I perform I try to be as lively and funny as possible. It's kind of wierd to explain, I just worry that they may feel that I am being fake, but i'm probably just being paranoid.

But for your question (even though you said no card tricks) I would highly suggest you do a nice strong self working card trick to start off. It is so great because you're completely clean and you don't have to concentrate on anything but your presentation.

Well, most schools emphasize the absence of cards in their classrooms because they think everybody is gambling and nobody would be interested in magic.

Book test. I tried it in my junior year and it kills. Its so right for school with all the books flowing around and such.

Other than that try some money effects. Impromtu coins across did very well for me. The version i used was on David Stones coin magic dvd's i belive it was the second one.

Try things out, worst that can happen is you screw up and say "well that needs a little work". Its not as scary as it seems ,
