Gimmicks aren't usually good for beginners. I would suggest geting some beginner card videos. Like Born to perform, or buying Royal Road to Card magic. If you like books. The raven has to be used with a jacket, or long sleeves, and it's only one effect. Buy a video with some variety like "On the spot" and maybe you can see what kind of magic you like.

I believe that everyone should own The Raven. I do not use it too often..but when I do it is worth it. I would get it just too learn the concept and the technique. Check out the Raven X2 though...the new version. I have yet to get it, but I here it is great.

I would get it but since you are a beginner I wouldn't learn to love gimmicks. Try a book or dvd also.

Bad advice in this thread...

Raven can be used without a jacket and in short sleeves.... even a T-Shirt if so inclined.

The "gimmick police" are out in full force here. Gimmicks are okay and all of them have them. For beginners it's a confidence builder and every serious professional magician uses them. Ignore the "gimmick police"

The raven uses a time tested method that goes back in magic probably to it's beginning. If magic is something you are going to pursue then it's a worthwhile purchase. I suspect the Raven X2 makes an addition to the original which I can't discuss without exposure; but in my opinion it's overpriced. Modern Coin Magic by Bobo even discusses a device so similar to the raven it's uncanny, and that book is under $10
