You can't crush it that much. You don't want to cause any crack in the can. Then the soda would seep through the holes you made in crushing the can. I just squeeze the sides so people can see that can is "empty." There really is no need to overdo the crushing. In the words of Eugene Berger, "Don't run when no one is chasing you."

It depends on how you set it up. Different variations of set up give you different amounts of available "crushage". But don't worry you can crush it enough to really get it across that the can is crushed and empty.

The issue of how much you can crush the can is not a big deal at all. Most empty cans aren't crushed anyways so no one is gonna care. The presentation is what's really going to sell the trick.
