I saw a magician do this once: He said to think of a number between 1 and 55, but the number can't include the number 8 in it (i.e. 8,28,38 ). I thought of my number, he wrote the number on his hand, and showed it to me. He did the same thing to my friend. How?

probably along the same lines as think of a number between 1 and 50. make it a two digit number. both of them have to be odd and they can't be the same digit. Okay now think. Is it 31?

It would either be a psychological force or he would have the find out the number before he showed you what he wrote.

If it was a psychological force - you'll want to look in to Psychological Subleties 1 and 2 by Banachek.

Also I hear Luke Jermay has a video coming out on it in the near future. I've seen him use them. He's great at it.

no, it can be 13, 15, 17, 19, 35, 37, why only 31?

Because first you will think in the middle.

Then, when you hear they have to be odd, you think:

"Ah, 3 is odd, but 2 isn't. I'll go for the 3 then. So now I have 33. Wait a minute. They can't be the same digit. I'll choose the... 1."

Taadaaa... 31!

It's 37, watch the blaine special again.
Statistically most people will pick 37 not 31.

you see people, even bucky310 and street_num have different answer for this one, this trick doesn't work.

Part of the point of these effects is that they aren't 100% surefire - makes it look even more like you're doing the whole psychological thing. It's like my version of Card Sharpie, it is only guarenteed to hit one of the three predictions I make, the other two I have to get to through subtle persuasion. It tends to hit 100% but only 8/10 times I reckon.

32

what number was written on his hand? The number 33 was the nymber that entered my mind with the first restriction you mentioned. The fact that is was 1-55 made me want to think of a number where both digits were the same and from 1-5, 3 will be said more than any other number.
