Okay..I'll paint a bull's eye on my back! My only mentalism illusion is What Is My Job? My favorite gig is at a local nursery school with a full stage with all the lights. The munchkins are in the darkness, but that's no problem for my simplistic effect.
Yet, I wonder how the mainline mystics perform tricks such as with books etc. when the audience can't read the books?
Obviously, one could have a volunteer come up the stage. Not the most pressing world problem but one I've long wondered about.

you just answered your own question. If they don't have them come up on stage, then chances are (since they're famous) that they can get the house lights to come on so they can read, and everyone can see the volunteer.
