Don Driver does suggest a very nice cane. I have one of those, as well as a cheap one (then a couple of McBride's ones). Using the one Driver suggested, as well as the cheap one, there is a noticeable difference. The cheap one simply is not balanced correctly. I fixed the balance issue on mine adding a weight to the bottom end (it also allows the gimmick to be retracted back into the cane once not in use). I personally use it just for practice now though, as it still is not as good as my more expensive ones.
My advice though, practice more with the cheap one. Make sure you actually like it, and see what you can get done with it. Then, once you're ready to move on, and are sure you like the effect, then buy the more expensive one. However, don't think that it is going to all come to you then. The practice is still just as necessary, and it will take you awhile to get the hang of it.
