Although there are a few dvds for mentalism beginners, you're going to have to get into books. If you hate reading books for your effects, you're not going to be a good mentalist. That's just the truth.
In order to get a good first book (yeah that's right, I'm going to recommend a book) I'd try 13 steps to mentalism by corinda. Either that or (what? another book recommendation? this guy's crazy) practical mental magic will do the trick too.
I'm a little confused about your last question. If you are wondering whether modern mentalists are good, then yes, we are good. There are many ways to adapt old techniques to modern times. Not to mention the fact that many of the old techniques still amaze as well as they did when they were first used, with the right presentaton of course.
Finally, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you're not ready for mentalism yet. Mental magic, maybe. But you're not going to be a good mentalist with the attitude you have right now. Think about it this way. If I were to start a new hobby today (say boxing) and I wanted to only use a speed bag for my punching training. I'd be limiting myself to one aspect of the sport. Sure, I may have fast hands, but I won't know how to properly punch someone unless I also have a heavy bag.
The idea of using only dvds to teach you mentalism is the same. Sure, you'll get some good effects in your repertoire. But if you don't already know what a boon writer is, and the author of the dvd doesn't address this, you might get confused and frustrated with the effect and just skip it all together. Furthermore, once you start skipping over things, you'll eventually quit just because everything above the foundation effects is much more difficult to pull off if you do not have a good understanding of the foundation.
So my recommendation remains, get into books if you want to get into mentalism. Otherwise, just give up now because you won't get far with just mentalism dvds. Plus you type like you're an early teenager so people probably won't take your mentalism seriously anyways. A good age to start practicing though. So if you do decide to get into books, keep it up.
