Absolute Magic:

Following the success of "Pure Effect", Derren Brown offers a detailed study of the most difficult task facing any close-up magician: how to make magic convincing. This is a rich and witty journey through the thinking of Britain's foremost current magical performer, whose television specials have revolutionised mentalism and drawn massive viewing figures.
"Absolute Magic" offers the profoundest thinking, expressed in the most memorable and vivid prose, and is a necessary modern classic for the magician or mentalist striving to make his performances more powerful.

This is a manifesto for performing excellence, not a mere collection of routines. But those who study it carefully will find much practical information, not only on close up magic and mentalism, but also Derren's unique approach to theatrical pick-pocketing.

Pure Effect:
Derren Brown, the most radical and original new thinker in the world of mentalism, will take you from excellent close-up magic to the most powerful mind-reading you have ever seen. With flamboyant wit, Derren explains the secrets and techniques that he uses to amaze the experts, drawing from hypnotic skills and breathtaking psychological artistry. This is brand new mindreading without compromise; no use of billets, envelopes or nailwriters will be found within these pages. This is a book for the serious thinker who would normally disregard 99% of a magic book's contents.

Description :
Hardbound With Dust Jacket, 168 Pages. Covering many techniques, including NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), this book is an essential reference for anyone with an interest in the work of Derren Brown.

I have both. I'll try to sum them up for you.

Pure Effect. This is the one to get if you are looking for effects. Some good card work, and some great information on truly mental card forces. Be warned - if you are looking for the instructions for Derren's effects "Lift" and "Reminiscence" - you won't find them in this book (they were only in the first edition, which is now extremely rare).

Absolute Magic. It's an interesting read on performance. Describes some good applications of using pickpocketing for mentalism. It's all about performance - no effects.

I wouldn't recommend either book for beginners, but if you're used to handling cards and want some interesting card and mentalism effects then I'd go with Pure Effect.

Pure Effect requires some good card handling ability. It assumes you are comfotable with packet switching for some of the better card effects. You also need SOME props, however these are VERY easily and cheaply made. The second part of the book concerning mental card forces requires no props or set-up - just a good understanding of the principles involved. Excellent book.

Don't get it if you want to perform the tricks from his show. This book covers mainly card work, although one of them is a great mind reading effect... you end up knowing the order of cards in the deck before they are even turned over. It covers some psychological forces at the end of the book, but it's mainly card tricks.
