It is an extremely visual stage effect that requires fairly little manipulation. But do not skimp on the quality of the sword. A good sword will allow you to have repeated performances with very little maintenance; and when you do have to fix something, it should be easy to do. I think I paid about $200 for mine a few years back.
The modern card swords allow you to produce up to three selected cards at a time. It's a very strong, visual way to close a stage routine. I would highly recommend it.
