The one I have now is actually 78 by 78, so try that, even try going down to 75 by 75. The size difference isn't that bad.

Yup, I still don't know why it's not working. I lowered it all the way to 75.

It still says "The avatar filetype must be .jpg, .gif or .png "

This is what I saved it under "Clockwork.png"

try using paint, if you are using windows, and save it as a .jpg.

Yup, I've been using paint. Thanks for the replies btw. I'll give it another go.

EDIT: Still says the same thing. Am I typing it wrong or something? I'm typing "Clockwork.jpg" Are there supposed to be any spaces?

I have given all the knowledge I have on the subject. I needed help with mine, lol.

I saved a pic from a site, put it in paint and stretched it down to 78 pixels. I then saved it again and used the Upload Avatar from your machine option. It worked for me, so I have no idea what is wrong with your avatar.

Make a screenshot,

Copy it on paint, cut it to the right size,

You can also use the little cutting tool (rectangle one) drag it over the size of your image and you can see on the bottom right corner the pixel X pixel size of your picture,

Don't drag and click, just drag and hold the drag.

If you want a cleaner image, you an use microsoft word to zoom or un-zoom to size, since word use vectorians calculations, the image wont have grimmy pixels and it will be cleaner.

hope this helps,
~Max

Gifworks.com has some good tools to resize Avatars and also reduce the file sizes if needed. This might help some of you.

I tried using this for my image, but I'm not exactly how I'm supposed to save it. Do I have to have a photobucket acount or something? And another question, how do you change a file type to GIF?

open it with paint/photoshop or another image edit software en re-save it as a GIF.
Some of the older versions of paint dont seem to support GIF tho and the one's that do dont have alot of quality(colours) so it might end up being different.

http://rsizr.com/

you can resize pictures here and maintain quality.

Also for Windows XP you got Powertoys wich can be downloaded here,

I just stretch and skew and keep entering values until it comes to 80 x 80, or close enough. I do it in paint. There is some distortion of course, as 80 x 80 compacts and does not give you much to work with. I wish the avatars here were at least 150 x 150 like other forums.

That's pretty much what I do ... I use Paint for the most part, and a little program that will sharpen the image.
I've also found that if you first save the image you're going to be working with as a Bitmap file, resizing will retain most image quality until you get it to the size you want it ... then after you get it to 80x80 resave it as a Png or Tiff file so it can be uploaded here.

At least 100x100 would be nice.

I'm happy the avatars are the size they are: any larger and they'd be distracting, as if they aren't already.

It is nice to see some color added to the blandness of just text.

Well, I know it's not exactly legible, but I finally got mine to work due to the help of rsizr. FYI, it says "Official Seal of Awesomeness".
