for everyone who wants a vague answer, metal...

for more detailed descriptions, I usually go for metalcore, black metal, death metal, hardcore, and emocore.

hahaha, sub-genres rule.

Czero, I totally disagree with what your saying.
All rap has a rhythm
Rap stands for rythm and poetry.
There is obviously a beat...
I cant see how rap cannot be seen as music

You obviously haven't been reading what i'm saying. Rap lacks melody and harmony. Rhythm alone does not constitute music--not to most musicologists, at any rate. Lots of things have rhythm. That doesn't make them music.

tuscan: Nah...i'm an old man. Getting pissed off takes too much energy.

i think that there is some great rap out there, and it has as much merit as any other work of art. my only objection is in calling it music.

By way of analogy, take an accomplished photographer like, say, Robert Maplethorpe. Few would argue that he was a brilliant visual artist who made wonderfully creative use of his chosen "canvas"...but no one has ever considered a Maplethorpe photograph to be the same sort of thing as a Renoir painting. That is not to say that one is inferior to the other, they are just different types of art.

If you don't make your pictures with paint, you are not a painter. If you don't make your sound compositions (or improvisations) with musical notes, you are not a musician. There is no value judgment here, no assessment of artistic merit. It's strictly a question of definition.
