i think that there is some great rap out there, and it has as much merit as any other work of art. my only objection is in calling it music.
By way of analogy, take an accomplished photographer like, say, Robert Maplethorpe. Few would argue that he was a brilliant visual artist who made wonderfully creative use of his chosen "canvas"...but no one has ever considered a Maplethorpe photograph to be the same sort of thing as a Renoir painting. That is not to say that one is inferior to the other, they are just different types of art.
If you don't make your pictures with paint, you are not a painter. If you don't make your sound compositions (or improvisations) with musical notes, you are not a musician. There is no value judgment here, no assessment of artistic merit. It's strictly a question of definition.
