Cap guns ain't loud enough....That's what I used to use....All shots in my mysteries come from off stage...
Nice suggestion though....

have you ever seen those guns they make to get birds out of trees? I'm not sure the name of them, but the loads have two reports, one when the load is fired up about fifty feet, then the real one, and man is it loud! I wouldn't use it indoors though.

I think a starter gun would cause hearing loss. You could go to your local gunsmith and see if he could load you some blanks with less gunpowder to customize the loudness. That's just an idea.

Adam, if your shots come from offstage, you could look for a sound effect of a gunshot. Just an idea. That way you can fiddle with the volume on your sound system and not have to worry about playing around with firearms for one thing and causing hearing damage to your specs.

Also, most cities requirre you to be checked out by the Police department before you use a firearm in any kind of stage production. That would just be an added hassle that a sound effect on CD would eliminate.

Just some thoughts. 8)

There are blank guns made for theatrical productions. I have a catalog that sells them.

Blank guns still have a blast flame that can come out of the barrel and /or out the sides from the cylinder. When I swam competitively we used a starter pistol. One of the guys decided to play "Godfather" with the gun and a towel and " shot " another teammate. Well he dropped like a rock clutching his belly. The thing actually burnt a divot in his flesh and left a charred blast mark on him.

I had one (blank gun) didn't use it much.scared to many people-loud,besides it looked so real.About two months ago one of my daughters criminal type friends stole it. I'd rather use flash paper to get peoples attention.
