What should the criteria be for accepting challenges from the general public?

you work with them and guide them. Give some guidlines, Rules that have to be followed, like dimentions and so on. No solder in key holes, just in case you cannot get out they can let you out.

I accept about 4-6 challenges a year. In addition to what's posted above, before any challenge is accepted, I inspect the device I'm asked to escape from (such as a safe). A third party also keeps the apparatus until the event. That way, the challengers (or I) can't modify the device once it's been inspected.

Also...Here's a bit of Houdini trivia for you...Did you know that MOST of the challenges Houdini did were completely set up? The whole thing was orchestrated by Houdni and his troupe.

As far as challenges go, you need to be prepaired for anything. Practice, practice practice. How? Challenge your friends to come up with unique but reasonable situations. However you still need to be in complete control. Remember safety first. You may come up against some very strange and unsafe situations. Personally, I feel that there is nothing wrong with setting some limits.
