Now in recent weeks there has been a large amount of semi to large threads where someone had a party in 1-2 weeks and some kid was asking for tricks to buy for it. In first reading, the people seem kind of mean when replying BUT i realized how important this is and want to share it.
I was recently asked to do a 30 min. party for a neighbor's kid. They payed well but obviously i have been in magic for such a short time that i wasnt prepared. I gracefully turned down the offer and realized how right i was. My neighbor had to find someone else on such a short notice that they got like a 15-16 year old amature. Now, according to her, he did awful. He forgot lines, did boring tricks, had no flow and was totally underpractised.
Now to the point, I want to thank all of the posters that tell off kids like the one i just mentioned. I also want to share with the Penguin Magic how glad I am to have them.

Glad to hear you turned down a show when you knew you weren't ready. THAT was a very professional thing to do and there is absolutely no shame in it. Better to blow them away when you ARE ready!

Kudos to you!

You're welcome and THANK YOU for taking and using our advice! You made the right decision and also had the great opportunity of seeing the consequences of somebody who made the wrong decision simply because they were out to make a quick buck.

bfan,
That decision shows that you professional and mature. Now put in the time and soon you will feel comfortable to take on any show and do very well with it.
You can walk away proud that you just made some kids party a huge success.

Sluggo, I really like this post. This is what it's all about: making a kid's birthday a special day. If you're in this business for the money, leave now because it isn't for you. Sure, money's important, but it's the looks on little kid's faces when you do something amazing, or the all the laughs at your joke that make it worth the work. This is why I really want to do more than the 2 or 3 kid's shows a year I've been doing.

I also am thankful someone took the constructive criticism as a positive thing and not in the other direction. :D
