Magic Coloring Book,

then Vanishing Crayons.

I picked these because they are visual (so are D'Lites) and they are something the kids will be used to seeing. Something with a silk would also be good. This is a good and easy silk trick.

All depends on your market. I occupy a nice market...I do teenage kids shows. Sounds strange but it's a lot of fun if you have good crowd control.

But I ramble.

I almost always open with LIPS (don't remember the creator) for older audiences. Its cute and gets a great reaction. Furthermore, you can then go directly into another card effect with the same deck, and even have a souvenir to give away.

But for little kids, use something that they can understand, is bright and colourful, and isn't cards. I often like silks to mouth coils to start.

I ALWAYS have a musical opener full of visual magic. It is a great energetic way to begin a show. It looks highly professional and most people enjoy it. I have several openers. One I like to call "Smart Packing, AKA Briefcase of wonders (it is an entire colorful, fast paced, visual opener that comes out of a single briefcase!)" and the other is called " Magical Happenings" Both are my own original openers.

I don't want to list all the details of them on this forum, but if anyone is interested in knowing about them, just give me a pm.

I too open with music, generally a production of a stremer. But as for the actual opener, the first couple of seconds, I tell a joke.

I start with around 6 different tricks performed with music. The tricks are very visual, and it captures the attention of not just the kids, but also the adults.

You want to start with something big and rememberable (and end like that too). People tend to recall most the first and last tricks, so it's important to make those ones the most spectacular. Another thing to consider is performing a trick first where you begin dirty but end clean, like some Appearing Bottle or Bowling Ball from Briefcase. The only place for these tricks is at the beginning of an act, so that's your problem solved.

In my case I've thought about performing Vanishing Bandanna as an opener, because the context of the trick is that it has just arrived and you want to try it out on your audience. It therefore seems more logical that you'd want to show it first, rather than a bunch of other tricks first.
