It all depends on the economics of your area, the prices of competition, location, population, etc.

Prices are higher in bigger cities because more people live their and such. Out in the country, people don't want to pay a lot for a magician.

As long as you are around the level of your competition you should be fine.

Call up local magicians and pretend that you are giving a party to get their prices. Then set yours at that level. I call around every year to other magicians in my area or have a friend do it for me, I then set my price to be higher than the others.

Exactly, March 1st of every year I do the same. I know Paddy that's why I put that in there, he knows I'm not being serious.

Yes Sluggo I do know that. Also I will openly admit my prices to Sluggo because I respect him and his education and abilities.

The ones I have problems with are "Bob and Betty Broada$$" who retired and went to Wal-Mart and got a clown costume and started doing parties without training, a good show, or even the knowledge of where to go to learn how to clown and perform.

Kyle answered for me Curly. But there is also perceived value. If I charge the same as everyone else, I am just as good as they are. However, if I am more expensive than the others here must be a reason, and that reason is that I am better than the cheap guys.

When people tell me I am too high I will ask them to check references from the others, then call my references. I give them the names of the last 4 parties I did, plus the phone numbers and names of the general managers of 4 restaurants where I work every week. If they bother to make the calls I will book them every time. If they don't make the calls, they get the entertainment that they deserve and I'll get them next year.

BTW there is a town in our area that is VERY RICH and to advertise in the local paper you have to have a criminal check by the police dept. Well when we went ot advertise the police called me in and ran my fingerprints. When I asked why they said "you work with our children. We will make sure they are safe." Well a week later they called and said I could advertise in the local residents paper because I passed the police check. I will tell people that I have been checked and can work in Indian hill (the rich area) and this is also a sales tool.
