Yes, you're being sexist.

Copperfield has both. Usually the male assistants are the ones pushing boxes on and off the stage.

I saw a clip of the trick from Oprah and I am guessing since David and the lady assistant appear from the back of the crowd at the end of the illusion that the injured helper may have been a body double for David...

David was never hurt in the accident. An assistant was the one who was hurt. Again, it wasn't David who was hurt.

Are you sure? He has not stated any position on the subject of preferring female assistants (or females in general for that matter) over male assistants.
He simply asked if it is indeed the case that magicians usually have female assistants. The answer depends, as you said, depends on what type of assistants are the subject of the question. Nevertheless, I don't think his asking such a question qualifies as an incidence of sexism.
