Hello everyone,

I have been practicing magic for a few years now. I’m 25 and when I rediscovered magic it was a very happy day in my life. I’ve devoted my time to learning the basics of SOH, mentalism and have done quite a bit of hypnosis training.
For the past 4 weeks I have begun to feel very differently about my work. All I can think is “This is so trivial, this is so trivial...”. It is vital to have a ‘Why?’ behind anything you do. For me it’s getting harder and harder to answer that with magic. So I can read your mind... so what? How does that benefit society? What is the point?
I’m sure a lot of you will say, you like to entertain, as do I, but what other reasons do you have for practicing our craft? It’s healthy to ponder these things and I’m hoping for some genuine help here.

Happy New Years everyone.

I've run into that too. I think what keeps me going is that magic has it's roots in art. It's a lot harder to do than in music or painting for example, but if you work hard enough on your character rather than the moves you do, I find that you can really get across a message through magic. You can say just about anything you want to say and if your a good enough performer, it will hit home with the audience. Although they might not be the most technically skilled compared to others whom we might consider move monkeys, I'd consider people such as Gazzo, Kyle Eschen, etc. the most talent magicians personality wise. If you've ever left a magic show and felt you knew the performer on a deeper level than just "the entertainment" that's what I strive for and the reason I haven't just moved on to an art in which I could more easily express myself; I have something to say and this is how I plan to say it. Just my opinion, but if it weren't for that I would have given up a long time ago.
