I am thinking of getting the The IMS Platinum Membership seems like a good deal with the test fees and DVD. Anyone have any reviews of their materials? How about the club itself?

This is more about a business for Tony Hassini (Founder) and not really a Club. I have a few of the DVD's and most were produced with Hassini behind the camera and not that well filmed. When Tony is in front of the camera, somebody else is filming. The videos are very raw and lack production quality. However, I must admit that the effects taught and the knowledge gained are both superb. It is really up to you though. I have met Tony on several occasions and he is a good guy. Would I buy the membership? To be honest, no. I just don't think there is enough substance for the $800 Dollar asking price. That's a lot of money! The same $800 Dollars would be better spent in your college years.

Sorry to tell you but the IMS is a bunch of total CRAP. i.e. The Merlin Award. The Order of Merlin is an IBM "award" for 25 years of continued membership. It is not what Tony Hassini claims it to be.

For US$800 it is a total rip off.

Wow that is a lot of money for all that stuff that is "free of charge". Magic marketing to kids at its best. I never got all those degrees, I just skipped straight to professional 25 years ago, and I did not have to take any tests. Kinda sucks though that I did not get to use the "Doctor Of Magic" title, sounds like a porn name. But other magicians do not decide when you are magician your audience does.

It would be nice to be able to afford to buy a "Merlin Award" trophy like so many others. Total BS to magicians, but the laypeople don't know that.

Quote:
There are three ways a magician can receive the Merlin Award. One is to attend our Merlin Award banquet dinner; this is by invitation only, after the recipient was voted to receive the Merlin Award.

Two is to participate and win a Merlin Award competition in different countries, which is organized by IMS with the event and convention organizers.

And three is for us to travel to the magician’s country and present the Merlin Award to them in their own country.

So, all I really have to do is pay his airfare to somewhere he wants to go and I'm in!

From the looks of their website, I would say that it's a ripoff. If they cannot invest in a very simple marketing move as a decent website, they don't deserve my money. The only thing I can see using that package for is showing my magic buddies that I have a "doctorate" in magic and trying to pass off said doctorate as legitimate to my lay-customer.
