Hello everyone,

Does anyone have trouble throwing a tiny wad of flash paper reliably? It seems to me that air resistance creates path variations each time I throw a little crumpled ball.

This is not really an answer to your question, just some fun things to do with flash paper when you don't have a budget for expensive gimmicks to ignite it.

Idea #1. Glue a match head (from a book of paper matches) to one corner of a piece of flash paper. Crumple it up into a little ball with that corner sticking out a little. You finger-palm the matchbook, striker side up. Using the striker pad on the matchbook as a little runway you use your thumb (same hand) to slide the matchhead over the striker which ignites it and you propell the flashpaper forward away from your hand. It's like little meteors shooting from your hand. Handy tip: Don't get glue on the top of the matchhead when you glue it on, for obvious reasons.

Idea #2. Get one of those champagne party poppers, remove the cardboard circle and streamers. Insert a LOSELY crumpled ball of flash paper just enough so it doesn't fall out. Do not replace the cardboard circle. You now have a poor man's hand flasher. Point away from humans and anything of value. Pull the string and a ball of fire will shoot from your hand. Just the thing to stop a charging guard dog.

Idea #3. Get one of those little firecrackers with a string hanging out each side. Wrap a ball of flashpaper around the firecracker. Tie a loop in each end of the string(s). Loop one of the loops over your middle finger and place everything else up your sleeve, with the other loop hanging out. When you want to create a flash between your hands just loop your middle finger from the other hand through the loop and quickly pull the whole thing out of your sleeve and pull tight, igniting the firecracker and ball of flash paper.

Idea #4. This one is more of a pastime. Use a straw as a little blowgun, blow DRY balls of flash paper out of the straw and through the flame of a candle.

These ideas come from the underground classic of magic, MAGICIAN'S ARSENAL by Lee Scott (1993 Paladin Press)
