What works best for me is to hold the cards in my left hand, bevel the cards with my right thumb right before I fan. Use your right-hand thumb to help spread the cards evenly.

to perfectly fan a deck, it depends on a lot of factors. the main factor is practice, practice, and more practice. your hands also need to be a decent size (depending on the size of the cards), and you need a fairly new deck. if you are using an old deck, just a normal thumb fan won't work too well because the cards will stick together. i recommend looking into the thumb and pressure fan, they look very nice. i learned them on ammar's first card magic video

Unless your a card manipulator then don't get fanning powder. This kid was asking how to and fanning powder won't help if he doesn't know how to fan. Go buy a book. Infact buy "Now you see it now you don't". -Max

forget the fanning powder. just practice. you will find that you will just develop a feel. you might think your holding the cards wrong or applying pressure wrong but just keep doing it and you will just be able to do it one day after a while it's hard to fan wrong if you even tried. just keep the cards clean, ie don't drop them all over the dirty floor. grains of dirt and fans dont mix. Cards fan nice right out of the box but even broken in ones fan good if you do a few riffle shuffles first creating a small layer of air between the cards. bicycles are air finished.
