I was just wondering if anyone out there was a bartender that did magic while on the job. I know the inventor of the No.2 Pencil (I forget his name) also tended bar, at least a while. I just thought it would be a good job and a great opportunity to do magic for people (before they get really really drunk of course). Any thoughts on this?

I know a bartender that makes 20 bucks vanish from my wallet every Friday night. Does that count?

I tended bar a little when I was much younger. I never did any magic at that time for anyone though. I wish I had. It's the perfect atmosphere for doing magic. A lot better than trying to do magic out in the open where young people can grab at your stuff and ruin everything. Behind the bar you are pretty much protected from that sort of thing. Knowing what I know now, if I was younger I would definately pursue a magic performing/bartender position. In fact I would like it so much that I'd probably go all out and buy my own bar just so I could perform under those conditions. Ah, if only I were younger!!!...:)

I have never bartended (I interviewed for a position one time.) But n the bar I had a lot of people buying me drinks. "I'll bet you a drink I know which color you will pick." ;-) (A version of hypnotic choice.)

Josh- I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all, but I just wanted to correct that his name(the inventor of the No. 2 Pencil) is Mark Jenest. I think that you were thinking of the inventor of Misled since they both use No. 2 brand pencils.

Yeah, bars would be cool to work in. Drunk people would have no chance at trying to beat you at 3 card monte, haha..

I bartend at a night club and do several card tricks for some of my customers. Some of them come in just to see if I have anything new for them. It has also helped with my tips. My only real problem is sometimes the loud music interfers with my patter and can really ruin a trick if the spectator has to keep asking "What do you say?".

I am a bartending magician! And YES DO IT! DO IT NOW! The only thing I will suggest from experience is get a LOT of tricks not a routine! I tried to do a routine for a while but, since you keep getting pulled back to make drinks for the wait staff or some new guy walks in and misses half of the build up, I've since stopped. I do suggest getting a theme going. I start with coins and then end with cards. (Check out my post about burn the card in "100 Dollar Tip" of course I was a busser then...) Do a trick let 'em hang. Do another let 'em hang build antici... Patin! andyou're Guaranteed a Name if not SWEET TIPS!!!!
