I have been doing magic for my youth group for a while, and the unordinary is slowly becoming the ordinary, i was wondering how to break that barrier?

I showed the old "bending coin" gag to a friend and he thought it was actually bending and he was shocked, i was thinking of getting a coin bend now, if i do, what would you guys recommend? (NOT SPUN! haha)

Don't perform for your usual audience for a while

Absolutely correct.

Another awesome statement.

Magic is becoming ordinary because it's something they see when they ask for it. Next time they ask, say "Ahh not right now, maybe next time." When you do perform for them, do one nice routine, something that leaves them wanting more. Limit the amount that you perform for them so the magic doesn't get stale.

Question: Are you performing the same tricks for them, and they already know the plotlines/climax, and are bored of them?

Or you are learning different tricks, bringing them every time and people are just getting bored?

If you're learning new tricks in like an hour and going to perform them, you probably suck at them because you haven't inserted any scripting, thought or presentation tweaks.

I personally would just stop performing in such saturated amounts for the same people. I used to have that problem at school. When I first started it, the people were absolutely shocked and loved the magic, but after showing so much of it for so long, I was just getting okay reactions, no matter what I did. I then just stopped performing for that group for a year. When I finally did do another little impromptu performance for them, those awesome reactions were back.

Magic should be a special event that people can remember and cherish, like Christmas. If Christmas happened every day, it wouldn't be special at all. The fact that Christmas only happens once a year is probably the main thing that makes it so special. Keep that in mind...

I had that same problem too... just space it out. Have like three effects you want to perform that are some of your best effects, that way after you show them you can wait a while before you show them more

So how long are we talking, magic once a month, magic every two months, six months?

I don't really think it is something you can set on a calender. You'll just have to feel out the potential audience. Also, seek out other audiences. Not always easy to do as an amateur but it is nice to have a few different groups of people to perform to.

I also use to show magic tricks to my fellow class mates in High School. To this day, it's what they remember me for. But once they were gone, I didn't have a new audience to move onto. It caused me to give up magic for a while.

It's better to widen and increase your audience than to increase your material. Not that there is anything particularily wrong with new material, but it'd be better to take the stuff you already have some competence with and show it to new people for the same reactions.
