Does anybody have an idea about if I would need to get the rights to perform tricks for a tv series pilot

Please understand that I am not a lawyer, but I can't imagine you having to get specific licensing for a television performance. I've seen lots of off-the-rack effects performed on television.

I recall seeing an effect once where it was specifically advertised that "television rights are not included," and I'm not sure if that is binding.

My armchair advice is to make the effect your own by adapting some of your own creativity so that it's no longer strictly "off the rack."

The best thing to do would be to contact the creator and ask permission. The creators are going to have great insight when it comes to performing their effects anyways. Most guys are more than happy to see their magic on tv. There are some though that would prefer not because of the difference between live and filmed performance.

If you are serious about a TV show it helps to network anyways so that when you have other places to go for magic.
