reading works for some but i'm a pretty visual person i like to see it done in a video rather than read it and decipher it and then practice. Besides I'm just trying to get enough tricks to make a show for right now i don't need the fundamentals. Any more suggestions anyone?

Learning from books is a little more difficult, but it's the best way because the best material is simply only in book form. I bought the royal road and didnt think I'd make it past the first few pages. Now I'm on chapter 4 and getting good results. I'm amazed with my progress. The information in books is invaluable though because the top magicians wrote them. There are good videos and DVD's I guess. But from what I hear, you aren't going to get the caliber or instruction that you get in The Royal Road, Bobo's Coin Magic, Tarbell or Practical Magic by Anneman.
