I don't agree with this assumption....I believe gimmicks and sleight alike can make up great routines, I'm not about to leave out the Invisible deck, B2 bomber, or flipper coin out of my act anytime soon, gimmicks can give you some of the best reactions possible and that's something I will not give up easily.
Invisible deck. flipper coin and B2 bomber get your best reactions? try doing some REAL magic. Go out with a piece of rope and a REAL deck of cards (not gaffed) and if you are even a mediocre magician you should have at least an hour long show without ever repeating an effect. Then you will see reactions from your audience.
I stand by my statement, gimmicks do NOT a magician make. Use of gimmicks is a kids method to pretend they are grown up.
