The opener... The hardest part of routining in my humble opinion.

What are your fravorite openers?

Makes no difference what the opener is. It is NOT the effect, it is the ENTERTAINER. I us several different effects. Appearing silk, hunter's knot, ring on rope. It is me that is the show, not the trick.

Daley's Last Trick is a great opener IMO, especially if you find the aces nice and fancy, it will be worth the impact and its a easy effect to make a few jokes in :D

I find that Luke Jermay's Subdivision is a fantastic way to produce the aces.

A simple and visual effect that will get their attention then get them more comfortable with you being that your just some stranger who walks up to them and does magic.

I used to open with the bounce no bounce balls. I can't remember who taught me the routine. It went something like this:

Hey guys, how you doing tonight? Care to be dazzled?
--Sure
I'm actually the magician tonight, but I need to know how long to stay at your table. Now, the higher this little ball bounces the longer I stay. Got it?
Magician bounces the ball
--Yup
Hand the spectator the ball. It falls flat on the table
Okay then, see you later!
Magician takes the ball back and walks away. He then turns around and comes back.
No, no. I'm just kidding...

And then continue with your set.

Bounce no Bounce Balls

'A quick visual effect...'

I think everyone knows that, granted. I'm looking for those 'QUICK VISUAL EFFECTS'...

Anyway I unlocked the key. It's two words.

sudden deck 2 is great opening
and you could pretend to pick up your fire wallet from the ground between two men and ask if it is theirs, when they say no, you open it to see whos it can be and it starts burning, "I guess thats why they say money burn a hole in your pocket",

you want something quick and visual to grab there attention. i would say stealth pen/b2 bomber and for a card trick i would say the Chicago opener.

I wouldn't ask for money right away.

not asking them for money, walking up with a bill. let me tell you what i do.

walk up to a table holding dollar and pen.
ME: did you know its illeagal to do this.
Stab!
ME: its still perfectly usable though. unless you do this.
rip down the side.
then i will do a magical gesture or whatever to heal the bill and it will get there attention.
