I just read through this thread. I'll answer a few questions about Canada.

In Canada, you have to declare the tips you make, and pay taxes on them. Though nobody does. If you are paid under the table, and do not claim your income, you will owe the government money, including interest, and a large fine. If you get audited however. I don't beleive 14 year-olds get audited ever.

You can't have minors in bars, but in restaurants that serve alcohol, you can. If the waiter/waitress is underage, they get someone that's 18 or older to server the drinks that are ordered. But as you are a magician, this would obviously not be a concern.

what routines or gimmecked card decks would you use if you work in a resturant im 14 too!

Update about money.....the under the table limit of reportable pay is $1,600.....My friend and I are starting a theater....legit....sort of....and planning on reporting our taxes....so I have a good bead on this now....

Most organizations have a set minimum of age 16. So it depends where you work.

FOr all of those 14 year olds that make a good amount of money without a restaurant job how do you make it. I have been looking into AOA, ETMCM, and AOCM and I only make a little because I only do a few lawns here or there and I shouvel snow. I am not babysittign yet so I need a way to make some money. ANYTHING WOULD HELP. TY

i also read through this thread right now, collin i just have 1 question for u, when u went out for the job what did u perform for them that made them sure that they wanted u for the job.

in other words what trick did u do to them that made them piss there pants

I'm 14 as well and work restaurants. It is illegal to perform at our age if alchohol is being served in our performing area (i.e. nightclubs, bars, or next to a bar). However, if you are just doing standard table hopping in a typical restaurant it is perfectly legal. Age really doesn't make all that much a difference if you carry yourself as a polite and professional entertainer. You have a better shot of getting a job at a restaurant at 14 with a good attitude than someone who doesn't act professionally with 10 restaurants under his or her belt and of the age of 25. It's a big decision to decide you are ready to work restaurants, so I wish you the best of luck. I see a lot of magicians who got lucky getting a job and don't know what they're doing. I hope you study well and thoroughly and don't end up like that.
