All I need is:

1 deck of cards
4 half dollars
5 or so rubber bands
1 sharpie marker
1 jumbo half

And everyonce in a while I bring a shoelace and safety pin.

of course there are tons of other small things you could/should bring:
bunnies
hotrod
packet tricks(twisted sisters)
shriking cigarette

but really the above 4/5 is all you need for resturant work where you really only perform 3 or so tricks a table and move on.

Mark

I completely agree with SharkAttack. There is no need to bring around that many things or have articles of clothing tailor made to add pockets. At the restaurant I work in, I would be fired if I walked in with a pair of cargo pants. Bring what you can fit COMFORTABLY in your pockets. The last thing you want to do when you come up to a table is start fumbling in your overstocked pockets looking for your next trick. Create a few routines that reset automatically or as close to automatically as possible and just carry the props for that set with you. Depending on the restaurant, you will probably not need for than 3 or 4 tricks per table, so carrying bags or loading tons of pockets is in my opinion absolutely unnecessary.

I don't spend much on clothing, but I do carry as many tricks as possible as long as I have easy access. I myself where beige cargo khakis( they have the enormus side pockets and other pockets all over. THen I have a black undershirt with a chest pocket. Top that with a small vest that has two inside pockets. Then a button-down black shirt. I unbutton one of the lower buttons and it makes it easy to reach through and grab tricks from my tee shirt and vest. All in all its 10 pockets. It's not too heavy or hot and it works great cuz I put the same tricks in the same pockets so I smoothly grab out a trick in a second. I didn't spend much on the outfit and I use it all the time.Greg

I take my magic case to work. It has most of my close-up effects. I wear a jacket. I only carry about 7 / 8 effects in my pockets. I will probably perform a max of 5 at any one table. I'd say at most I will do 2 card effects especially if it is a mixed audience. women tend not to like cards too much. One major fault of young close-up magicians is to do too many card trick which is soooo boring. even if, individually, each card trick is awesome, one after another after another is BORING. Each effect is lost on the spectator as they become unable to distinuish one card effect from another later when they try to recall what you did.

One thing might surprise you if you start performing in restaurants is how FEW tricks you need to perform at each table. It is very very easy to make 3 tricks last ten minutes and ten minutes is the absolute max when you`re working tables.
The time when you need to fall back on your vast repetoire is when you`re up at the bar during your break or after the main event.
I only perform card tricks and have one gaffed deck consisting of Red See Passover, Ultimate 3 Card Monte and Double Back, plus an ungaffed deck.
Other than that I have one packet consisting of Twisted Sisters and another one with 4Jokers/4 Blanks.

..Which is fine unless people at your table don't like card tricks or someone asks you to do something other than a card trick. I would diversify if I were you.

i, too love card tricks, and am deep into card magic. but i also agree, to many card tricks is boring. cary along the stealth pen, you can do the effect, and then, if you want, go into the routine from on the spot. also i like to cary around scotch and soda, great trick, although you have to stop to setup if you want to do it again.

here is the list of things i carry around:

Stealth pen
Deck of cards
loose Change (3 quarters, 3 half dollars, 1 nickle)
Raven (i just wear it)
Sponge balls
twisted sisters

those are just some, i like to carry around some different things each night, just to give it a little variation.

I usually wear some militar camo pants with plenty of pockets.

That way I can carry a lot.
