I've been preforming for family and friends for a while now but i want to start preforming for other poeple. Im thinking of going to a mall and just spend the day there at the food court. Is this a good place to start? Thanks for the help.

NO. Not the mall! Unless you have permission from the person in charge. I was doing it a few weeks ago. And a guard came up and told me to put my cards away. For some reason, he wanted to search me. I guess it was because he knew I was a magician and hoped to find some gimmicks in my pockets. Luckily for me. All I had was change.(Thankyou Greg Wilson.) I can entertain enough with those. Although he didn't find anything, it was pretty embarrassing.

He has no right to search you! I have been performing on the streets for 12 years now and only once have I been hassled by the police (NYC - ended up in 42nd st. jail for selling art work on the street - I raised a stink and all charges were dropped.)

You should know your rights when it comes to this. Unless you were imposing on people or soliciting, they need a reason to search you. You can't get arrested or get a ticket for meeting people and having fun (again - if you were making money, its a different story)

did he do a body-cavity search? are you sure he wasn't just trying to intimidate you to cop a feel?

I would have asked him for his papers, taken his name, "phoney badge" number and immediately ask to speak to his superior. That would have shut him up.

I work at a mall that regularly has a group of street performers that they book through a separate agent whom we all share. The mall does ask performers who are not part of the program to stop. If you want to try a mall, just find out who the mall manager or person in charge of public relations is and see what you can work out. Worst that happens is they tell you no.

You should sue the mall. I'm not one for suing anyone for copious amounts of free cash, but if a company lets a worker voilate your rights like that, they deserved to get sued. Or at least sue to have that guy fired.

Sorry guys, it's The Good Ole USA but Shopping Malls are private property. Just because they allow public access doesn't mean you have all the entitlements granted under the constitution.

That said, the Mall Guard went overboard in searching. You did have the right to decline a search and if you waived that right then it's your bad.

If your intent is to go to the mall and entertain strangers then you are soliciting wether you ask for money or not. Stop by the Mall's offices and obtain permission first.
