I'm not sure how old you are so just taylor this to fit your situation.

You need to break the ice with whoever you are performing for. What I do is after the first or second trick (simple one's usually)my wife brings me a note and will say that it is urgent. I will then read the note look up and say "It seems that someone has lost a roll of money with a rubberband wraped around it. Does this belong to anyone here?" Someone will always say that it belongs to them. Then I say "well good news we found your rubberband" I say this while throwing the rubberband at them. Everyone will laugh and you have now broken the ice and the rest of the night is easy.

I had to listen to Scott Hollingsworth at Magic Island tell that joke every day for 3 years.
