Sometimes when people say "How did you do that!" i say " Oh shoot i just forgot." then go into some more

For instance I really have no idea how some tricks work, like the 3x7 cards one! So why not use it on ones you do know?

If you just did a REALLY good trick that just blew them away do this

Spec: "How did you do that!"

(whisper) "ummmm, that wasn't supposed to happen" then smile and walk away or do another trick.

Or you can say "I'm just really really lucky"

i just let my specs do the stuff like: snaping fingers, rubbing their hands over the cards, or say stuff like: hocos pokos.
i do that to avoid these kind of questions, if i'm asked by the spectator which i invited to help me how i did the trick i say: "how did i did it? HOW DID YOU DID IT?!?!"
if i'm asked from another spec in the audiance how i did it, i say:
I GOT NO IDEA!!! ask ur friend over here, he's the one who was doing all the work...

when i do those kind of things i get huge laughts, and it makes the trick more "magical" to the spectators as well.
btw, this also avoids people from wanting to examin everything, i even invite THOSE who say they know everything. then i say:
"darn, u ARE a magician". after that i quietly say: "teach me how u did that one later ok?!"

You could always say "A friend showed me this effect the other day and forgot to tell me how it was done sorry."

Hmm, that seems to only make you come across as [edited] by making a blatant lie. That isn't honistly the best you can come up with is it? When people ask me I just think to The Simpsons, Stone Cutter episode when Lenny would constantly say "It's a secrate" and I try to say it as much in that idea as posible. It isn't witty, but I don't make a lie that is both insulting to the audience and hurts the way I am percieved as a human being.

As Stan Allan said in a lecture, you are always being judged for your next gig, wether it is before your show, after, during, or whenever. So don't make stupid choices and make your audience hates you.

The only time that I make an exception is when I get an audience member who's only purpose is to try to make me look bad. Then I tear him apart in front of their "friends"

I think its kind of funny. I mean come on, Everyone will know he is joking and not lying, its just funny

John, I don't think any of the above lines are particularily insulting. especially if they're said in the right spirit with a nod and a wink. If you think they're insulting just based on the fact they're a lie try this patter for the disappearing coin.

"I pretend to take this coin in my hand while secretly dropping it into the other. From my pocket I take some woofle dust, sorry, I'm insulting your intelligence woofle dust doesn't exist, neither does Santa for that matter. I'm just dropping the coin in my pocket. And hey Presto the coin has been vanished sorryI mean put somewhere else"
