i just came across this thread and i do something completely different than all of you, as this "I know a magic trick" has come up many times. Let em do it. Absolutely let em do it. Act modestly impressed. And go into your routine. Try it. I swear itll be effective because look what happens. They do a crappy trick, and that becomes the standard, the expectation. Act modestly impressed, nod your head, show him your respect. You could say something like "My turn" but I wouldn't. Take the cards and do the most impressive trick you know. Their trick is going to foil yours and actually make it look even better. I know it doesn't sound to hot, but try it. Trust me, when somebody feeds me that line, I take it as more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

My standard response:

Spectator: "Hey I know a really good card trick, let me see the cards."

Me: "I would sir but if I let you see the cards then I have to let everyone see the cards and pretty soon we have anarchy. Besides, you'd probably do something cheesy and generic like make someone "Pick a card any card."

Pause....

Turn to another member of the audience...

Me: "You ma'am, please if you would *pressure fan* PICK A CARD ANY CARD!"

Self deprecation is always endearing and funny.

I know what you mean. Whenever you say "pick a card" they say "oh I know this one, my uncle harry used to do this one all the time!" I usually just say, "Awesome I'm a little rusty so would you mind showing us?" and I hand them the pack and tell them to continue. They usually just say no and let me continue while they are busy looking like an idiot.

It really funny when the spectator says "I know this trick!" the moment you ask them to pick a card. It's like they dont relize that there are a million tricks that can be done with a simple "Pick a card trick" BTW, Quintino, i like ur idea alot.

That is funny. But if that was actually the one they were going to do, they would be pretty embarrassed.

If you deck isn't gimmicked, hand him the cards. No big deal.

almost anyone who dosent know real slight of hand magic will show you a cheasy "3 piles of 7 cards." It drives me nuts. its SOOOO funny when they try to turn over the bottom card secretly but end up making riffeling sounds and they drop the cards. I let them do the trick, say "that was good", and show them my best one. It blows them away (plus it makes me feel better than all of them)

say, "can you repeat that?"

then, when they open their mouth, long distance spinner into their throat. they will choke and if they survive, will think twice before smarting off to you again
