Here are some outs I use when I screw up a trick....which is often


1. "jeez...that's weird, it worked in the magic store"

2. "Oops...did I say I was a magician? I meant musician! For my next song I'd like to play..."

3. "The real magician will be here shortly, I'm just standing in"

4. "It's all part of the show folks--the part that hasn't been rehearsed!"

5. "That's the first time that ever happened again"

6. "It doesn't look as bad from my side"

7. "I'm curious to see how I get out of this myself"

8. "What do you expect, I'm paid 3 dollars an hour, and don't even work for more than 10 minutes, you do the math"

9. "I knew I should've had decaf"

10. Stare blankly at the trick that went horribly wrong. Blink your eyes a couple of times really stupidly. Then throw it over your shoulder and practically yell "...AND FOR MY NEXT TRICK..." Then just go on with your routine.

11. If you drop something, "Wow, good thing the floor was there to catch that"

12. "I forgot to compensate for the rotational effect of the earth"

13. "Did... did I show you the (insert last successful trick) trick?

14. "Wait - COME BACK"

15. "Wow, its so quiet in here you could hear a career drop"

16. "That's what we magicians call misdirection, I pretend to mess up, and while I have your attention, my assistant sneaked by into the next room with an elephant for a trick I'm doing later. If you don't believe me, go check."

17. "There is only one thing this trick is missing... talent!"

Anyone ever performed the really impressive flourish transposing into 52 pickup trick?

I lost a section of cards the other day for the first time, while flourishing. I was pivoting with my index, and lost control. It was the most uncomfortable feeling having to bend down and pick them up in front of my spectators. I was able to joke about it and make them laugh. But still, I didn't like the feeling one bit. I have NEVER thought I'd do that. Heh.

If it ever happens again, without blinking or saying a word, I'm just going to drop the rest. Reach into my pocket. Pull out a deck and ask the spec to pick a card, any card. It will get a good laugh, and the show will be un-interupted. When I'm done, I'll just walk away leaving the cards as a souveneer.

Anyone else have that happen to them?

you should burn your cards if they land on the floor. it's like a flag landing on the ground.

same with coins. you should melt them

if you drop your cards, ask an uber-hot chick to pick a card, then stare at the rump.

I always like this one: "I could have sworn David Copperfield did this one right. What did you expect? Real magic?"

Is there a MAgic for Dummies? I don't think there is but that would be funny.

There is a Magic for Dummies lol. My school library has a copy I believe. I read some of it for fun one day, it's all pretty basic.

yes it is pretty basic but it has great showmanship information and it has a lot of info on the history of magic and famous magicians

Don't underestimate Magic for Dummies. It is basic, but has some decent impromptu effects (some by some famous magicians like Greg Wilson and Daryl) and some decent self working card tricks. I use some of the stuff there with my school magic club.
