My wife says that it's not easy to be married to a magician. I tell her to pick a card. She replies, "I'm in the shower!"
So I tell her to dry a hand. LOL

yea, I can guess how it feels, lol... good thing I'm 14.... probably gonna be alone for the rest of my life, who wants to marry a loser like me...

My g/f use to like to see a card trick when i first started, now she doesn't care to see any magic. She likes to have my undivided attention, but everyone needs to have something else that they enjoy as well. My something else is magic .

My wife is the same way, I have to beg her to be a test dummy sometimes. The only good thing about my wifes interest in magic, is she likes watching, just not while I learn. She constantly browses the web for new effects, and buys them, hands 'em to me and says, "learn it". That is tough 'cause you get some tricks you don't like, but sometimes, its like you hit the jackpot. I'm trying to find a PK vid to show her, She saw Raven and wants that, but I want PK, so if I can make it her idea, I'll be all up in the house.

But, she will grab top or bottom cards if she isn't in the mood. A fun thing to do to wifes that are always testers, is throw an unexpected color change in somewhere, that keeps my wifes interest sometimes.

Magic and marriage has been great for me. I dont flood my wife with tricks so when I do ask her to watch something she is usually happy to do so. After I show her, I will tell her how it is done, this way she can watch me do it again from different angles and such. Sometimes I dont get the "jaw dropping" reaction from her that I would normally get because she has seen so many miracles she expects it. The thing I like best is the few birthday parties I have done magic at she will watch the kids and parents faces when I do an effect just to give me the feedback. Its nice to know that when I vanish that silk in my hand and am watching the wide eyed children stare in amazement, the parents have a similar reaction pasted on their face followed by a wispered "how the edited did he do that"

You tell your wife how the trick is done?? I thought one is not suppose to reveal the secrets unless to fellow magicians....

I'm not slagging you here but heres the same problem I face. I do some effects to my girlfriend and she gets pissed off when I do not tell her how its done. I had a hard time convincing her why I can't reveal.

But hey, if you can convince me its actually ok and good to break this unspoken 'code', then i might actually do the same as you heh heh....

Well here is why I reveal things to my wife. She is my WIFE of 4 years. We have 2 children together and a very strong relationship so I dont see us ever seperating. We were best friends for ten years before we started dating so I know her better than anyone else and trust her dearly. If she was just ( and I dont mean anything by that) my girlfriend than I would not tell her. We could break up next month and she could blab a lot of secrets just to piss me off. Beacuse of the trust I have in her ( and believe me, to trust a someone to be the mother of your children is trust enough to reveal some magic) I dont fear any leaked info, even in an unlikely event of a seperation.

Second, I dont know any other magicians, so I find it of great use to have someone that knows how something is done to be able to critique your perfomance and handling of an effect.

Third, I dont have to hide in a closet to practice my effects or worry about leaving my TT on the coffee table. If you live with a women, sooner or later she is going to learn some things. My TT has been saved a trip to the wahing machine a few times by my wife checking my pockets as well as other things that may not fare so well in the wash.

Thats it in a nutshell. Other than showing my wife how an effect is done, I never reveal anything to anyone...no matter what.

Hey I've thought much about it too ya know, its good to have a commentator or someone whom u can afford to screw up a little when you do the trick for the first time.

Its a tricky situation I guess.

If I take the points you've mentioned, and apply them to a different person. Not wife, but instead a very good friend, in fact, best buddies. Won't this work too? It probably should. But, your best buddy have their own best buddies too. Who's to tell if they won't be compelled to reveal when the opportunity presents itself.

In the case of the wife, this situation might arise too. Just imagine a hypothetical situation, where you perform a particular mind boggling effect in front of some people which includes your wife and her best friend/ or sister whom she is very close to. After which the best friend/ sister turns and asks your wife, "WOW!! that was amazing? know how Gary does that?? Tell me please...I can't sleep at night if I don't know the secret..." Now your wife is in a spot. She knows the secret but she can't tell, and offends her friend/ sister in the process. Or she might tell, thinking its harmless and she doesn't want to disappoint or offend a friend/ sister. She could lie and say she doesn't know if she wanted to, but then she'll have to go through the moral struggle of having to lie to her best friend/ close sister.

Might happen don't you think? Or has it happen? Anyway I think there are good points and bad points. But I guess even if you do get your wife to become an assistant or critique. You should still lay some ground rules about her keeping secrets. Again that's a tricky situation. But thats for another discussion I guess.

Good points but my wife and I have an agreement. Anyone who asks she just says she has no idea how it is done and that I won't tell her. Again, it comes down to trust and I trust her more than anyone in my life so I feel safe telling her.

Sometimes it's good to tell your wife how some of your magic is done. I once left a Raven set up in my jacket. My wife gave the jacket away to a charity not knowing its secret. That was the end of the jacket and the Raven. Oh well...
