sometimes you can put it back without them noticing and then just do it again. I did this when i was doing my sponge ball routein someone noticed me do something that would have given away most of the trick but i just undid my move and showed my hand was empty and did the move again when he wasnt looking!

if its a gaffed deck/coin, just keep a non-gaffed spare in a pocket. If they say anything, ignore them until you put the gaffed one in your pocket, then react and if they still want to see it, pull out the regular one.
