Actually I do hear it a lot... but it mostly comes from me when they ask how a trick is done :)

I saw someone one t.v, after being told that same quote, took a mirror and said, nope but this one is, and then bent the mirror like rubber. Afterward she handed it out for inspection.

Smoke and mirrors I think are often used to trick the audience in stage shows.

I have never been asked that before.

I've never heard this when doing close up.

I do a packet card effect called "Done With Mirrors", though, which is a piece of cake but plays really well. At the end of the effect, four cards which have (apparently) been shown on both sides end up turning into mirrors on both sides. As I do that, I explain that the preceding effect is all done with mirrors. On only one occasion have I had someone genuinely think I had explained how the effect worked.

Ditto for "it's up your sleeve". Which of course, I immediately agree with if I'm wearing a t-shirt. Or if they're wearing sleeves and I have something palmed: "No, it's up yours" as I reach into their sleeve and produce it. Depending on the audience, it may be appropriate to make a rude gesture whilst delivering that last line :)

When I perform the circle square deception, people in the crowd think it's a mirror, even when they see the yellow tube go in the box.

Never heard this myself. Although, one time my aunt asked if I was a robot, and if I had secret panels in my wrists where I would hide cards. I thought that was pretty funny. I of course said, "Yes, and that the surgery was very expensive."

People just tend to assume that I'm Lucifer. Seriously.

Having a pocket mirror for this line is great though. If you can pull it out after the comment and make some crack about how handsome you are, it gets a laugh. Try to get the ugliest, most garish, huge mirror that you can fit in your pocket.

heres what you do in this delicate situation: take their pen and do the naked gun vanish(come on you guys have seen naked gun right) into the nearest fish tank and imediatley go into a home alone face. this works great good luck!

If they do ask if mirrors were used, hold up your palm as if you were holding a mirror and say "Oh really? How's my hair look?"

Swipe your hand through your hair and move on, knowing you got the better of them.

I use the "it's done with mirrors" thing for a laugh. Like when someone asks me how a card trick is done I say something like "The woman isn't actually cut in half. It uses mirrors" and if Someone asks how I did a coin trick I say something like "Gimmicked card you see". It's just my own personal strange sence of humour.
