Hi guys,

I have been in the world of magic for years now and im ready to attack a bigger environment. At first I tought that restaurants would be great for magic. After couple of days, I remember that hotels is probably much better than restaurants for magic. I have a lot of routines specialy addapted for this kind of work.

Ive made a list of hotels that I can go and ask them. The only problem is that I really dont know how restaurants work with this kind of magic propositions. Do they hired magicians? I would love to do magic in hotels, this have been my dream for a long time.

So if you would be me, how would you introduce yourself for people that never had to deal with this kind of decision?

You say you have "been in the world of magic for years now." Could you elucidate a little further, like how many years. From your writing "ability" I am think that you are still in school. To be precise in grade school.

well, I have been practicing magic for 8 years now and do regular gigs for 3 years. Im 18yr and i'm in college. I did coporate events and private gigs. My magic is fresh and young. That's about it.

My english language ability is because im not an american. My first language is french, you know...francais du Québec caliss!

Im only asking for good advices, I have a total confidence in my magic and my skills, so dont try to convice myself and say that im not ready for it! ( im sure you'r not paddy!)

Get some books. Peter Lansing, Jim Pace, Eugene Burger, and Kirk Charles (harder to find, but my favorite, well worth the money) all have great sources. As well as Live at the Jailhouse DVD set. It's worth they money, and will answer all of your questions. If you have additional questions, we will greatly help.

Raph, I am confused by this question. You say that you don't want to work restaurants but work hotels. Not sure if there is a market for magicians working in hotels. Unles you mean that you want to specialize in restaurants that are located in hotels.

If that is the case you work them exactly as you would any restaurant. Also you have to sell them just as ypou would any restaurant, through the general manager of the restaurant, not of the hotel.

To answer one of your questions, as a magician you are not "hired" to be there. You are contracted to be there. You are your own employer responsible for all taxes and to provide your own liability insurance. They will give you a flat fee per night and you can accept tips from the customers to increase your income.

The resources that Fallingblood mentioned are all excellent and would be good to pick up to learn more about this line of work.

I thought I'd also mention that Carl Andrews's book "Magic from Maui" has some information that might be worth a look. Carl specializes in working tropical resorts, and in the first section of the book he discusses how he got the jobs, as well as sample letters, promotional materials, etc.

Because he performs in a popular tourist spot, he is exposed to a wide range of travelers, many of whom are business people who book him for corporate work. Between the outside gigs and the steady income at the resort restaurant, he's made a nice living for himself.

I'm not familiar with your particular area of the world, but if you think you'll have similar opportunities where you live and would like to pursue them, then "Magic from Maui" would definitely be worth a look.
